Day 5: Ganges to James Bay, Provost Island
We had a long walk ashore into Ganges for shopping, an arts faire, and
farmers' market and thus dropped a bundle o' money. There were two very
cool book stores on the waterfront; old and funky with all manner of interesting
books. One even had a large maritime section. We went back to the boat
for water (amidships tank was empty) then had to leave by noon (marina rules).
We ended up circling for nearly an hour to get to the pump-out station.
That dock was exposed to the 15-20kts SE wind that came up again. But, we
got in and out without incident. The boat has power in reverse I didn't
even know she had (backed straight into the wind like it was glassy calm).
After that it took us another hour or so to get to James Bay. It was a
pretty tight anchorage with 40-70 foot depth until very close to the rocks and
another six boats already anchored. I was nervous about the 3:1 rode in 30
feet of water with close neighbors (couldn't actually put out any more rode without
running into two other boats), so stayed on board all afternoon. No issues
arose and we both read and read our new books. Dinner of fresh halibut, corn on
the cob and salad - all from the Ganges markets - was delightfully tasty.

Day 6: James Bay to Roche Harbor, San Juan Island
The wind in our face all day long - SE 10-15kts. Still we made it
mostly according to plan except for rip tides at Turn Point, Stuart Island and
again Battleship Rock, San Juan Island. We made it through U.S. Customs in
about 10 minutes, refueled and parked for the rest of the afternoon. I
deflated and stored the dinghy and motor to reduce work at home the next day and
to not tow it the 65 miles all the way to Seattle. Dinner at the resort
was punctuated by the famous "colors ceremony" at sunset when the Washington
state, Canadian, UK and US flags are taken down with much music, pomp and
circumstance.

Day 7: Roche Harbor to Seattle
A final 5am departure to beat the tides and currents through the Straights.
Ended up pushing against the flow through Admiralty Inlet but made the schedule
exactly, pulling alongside the Meadow Point buoy at 5 minutes to 5pm.
