"The Old Days" - The beginnings of my writing career

I have no doubt at all the Devil grins,

As seas of ink I spatter.

Ye gods, forgive my "literary" sins -

The other kind don't matter.

Artificial Intelligence - I first began writing consistently in the mid-1980's during a 6-year stint working in an Artificial Intelligence (AI) lab for a major international corporation.  AI is a highly specialized technical computing field that includes machine intelligence, computer learning and expert systems.  My work in Expert Systems allowed me the opportunity to publish a number of papers and technical memos.

Sailing - Also during the early 1990's I renewed my love affair with sailing and spent many happy hours on the commuter train to Boston writing about it on my new laptop bought specifically for that purpose.  The resulting story, Return of the Springtide, was rejected by several sailing magazines, but provided a springboard for me to break away from technical writing a venture into other non-fiction.

Biography and People - I have written about people, both historical and currently popular figures, from a sense of personal history.  I began writing biographical material based on a personal connection to the subject (he was my great-grandfather) but continued when I found that understanding the personal journey of an individual through his or her historical setting brought both a better understanding of the person and personalized the history.  These are the biographical pieces I've written.

Essays and Articles - In a sense, writing when you feel that somebody needs to have information that you have, is a form of public service.  It is with that perspective that I've written from time to time on topics where I felt my experience or point of view might be of benefit to others. These are sample essays and articles in which I written with this goal.
